Democrat for the

Working Class

Meet Alex

Alex Valdez is a nonprofit leader, nurse in training, and former Sergeant in the New Jersey Army National Guard. Raised in a working-class immigrant and union household by his mother and grandmother, Alex learned early that service starts at home by taking care of your family, your neighbors, and your community. A proud graduate of Kearny Public Schools, Alex and his fiancée, a public school teacher, live in Kearny just minutes from where he grew up.

For more than a decade, Alex has dedicated his life to service, supporting low-income students, working-class families, and refugees. Now pursuing a career in healthcare, he believes public service means showing up for people when they need help most. Alex is running for Hudson County Commissioner to bring responsive, compassionate leadership to District 9 and ensure Hudson County remains affordable, safe, accessible, and clean for the next generation.

Priorities

  • Hudson County is in the midst of an affordability crisis, but we have the tools to face it head-on. We need to build more affordable housing, protect tenants and small landlords, set clear rules for developers, and ensure rent control laws already in place in Hudson County are enforced.

    My Plan:‍ ‍

    • Partner with municipalities to promote fair housing practices while fighting rising property tax, housing costs, and illegal rent hikes by large landlords to guarantee citizens’ long-term stability

    • Protect homeowners by demanding responsible county budgeting and opposing unnecessary property tax increases

    • Advocate for increased state and federal grants to preserve neighborhood character and expand affordable housing options for seniors, veterans, and working families

    • Combat food insecurity and rising prices

  • As our county grows, we need practical solutions that make everyday life less stressful. Our community requires smarter infrastructure planning to reduce congestion and make it easier for residents to get where they need to go.

    My Plan:

    • Increase county funding to public transit initiatives, to expand inter-county bus and train lines throughout West Hudson

    • Update county road patterns to reduce congestion and implement Bus Rapid Transit on major county roads

    • Expand Hudson County’s Vision Zero Initiative and partner with local, state, and regional agencies to improve street safety design and eliminate traffic-related violence

    • Create more practical parking solutions

  • Our communities are strongest when the people who live and work here can afford to stay. Recent studies have found that climate change costs residents and businesses across Hudson County more than 600 million dollars annually. As the effects of climate change worsen and intense storms become more frequent, our residents should not be burdened by these costs.

    My Plan:

    • Support responsible development that includes workforce and middle-income housing

    • Adopt a countywide Climate Action Plan

    • Prioritize the mitigation of flooding hazards by implementing long-overdue infrastructure improvements in areas such as Route 508 in Kearny

    • Improve stormwater management, including more rain gardens and bioswales along county roads

    • Increase investments into green space throughout Hudson County

    • Stand against any new projects that increase environmental burdens on our community

    • Standing against any new projects that increase environmental burdens on our community

  • Trump and MAGA Republicans are targeting our immigrant neighbors and making life more expensive for working people. District 9 deserves a fighter who will stand up for our community.

    My Plan:‍ ‍

    • Support immigrant families and uphold dignity for all residents

    • Push back against illegal ICE raids

    • Ensure government reflects our shared values of fairness and respect

  • As your County Commissioner I pledge to be responsive, transparent, and accountable. With 20% of your property taxes going to the County budget, you deserve to know how your money is being spent.

    My Plan:‍ ‍

    • Share easily consumable data visualizations and explanatory statements on the county website

    • Conduct frequent town halls and publish a community newsletter

    • Better access to transcriptions of meetings in multiple languages
